Katelin was my first Boxer. I found her like many other people do, through an ad in the paper. I didn’t know anything about what a “backyard-breeder” was. Well, I found out! She was a very sick dog. At one year of age she developed severe allergies and recurrent skin infections, and my vet also diagnosed Cushing’s disease. At one point she was so sick that we almost made the decision to have her put to sleep, but after thinking and crying about it, I decided that I just couldn’t do it. No matter the cost or heartache, I was determined to save her. Finally after two years of allergy shots, antibiotics, steroids, and TLC, her allergies subsided, and her coat, which had all fallen out, grew back beautifully and her overall health improved dramatically. She had completed her CD title before her health problems got so bad (with 4 Novice A class wins, I might add! Scores of 191, 193 1/2, 195 & 196!). With her health back, we continued Obedience training. She completed her CDX with six straight Open A qualifying scores. Then we went on to Utility. Took just 9 trials to finish her UD with class wins for each leg! Some pictures of Katelin can be seen below.

Sadly, Katelin passed away on February 19, 2001 after 12 long, wonderful years. She now rests in her favorite spot in the yard, forever under the sun. |
